Business with a Biblical Worldview

Integrating Business and Biblical Worldview

Integrating a biblical worldview in business education is crucial to sustaining ethical practices in today’s fast-paced business environment.  Dr. Meger Chappell’s experience recommends him as an ideal candidate for leading TBC business students in their pursuit of excellence in business.  As a new member of TBC Faculty, Dr. Chappell brings with him exceptional skills, knowledge, and a strong commitment to maintaining a biblical worldview within TBC’s business program.

Dr. Meger Chappell is a retired Captain who served in the United States Navy as a career Surface Warfare Officer.  Highly experienced, decorated, and accomplished in both his Navy career and academic career, Dr. Chappell brings exceptional wisdom to the TBC’s business program.  (Read his bio here)  TBC is thrilled to welcome him as the new Business Department Chair!

In a recent interview, he spoke about his vision for TBC business students, sharing insights on the importance of learning how to lead under stress, the relevance of conflict resolution, and how a biblical worldview can influence a healthier economy.

Leadership Under Stress

Business at all levels brings with it varying degrees of pressure.  Maintaining effective leadership in high-pressure environments requires resilience and sound decision-making. Drawing from extensive experience in the Navy, particularly in command roles, Dr. Chappell emphasizes the importance of staying composed and making informed decisions even under stress.  This includes the ability to adapt and maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity.

Reminding students that this is not a short-cut strategy to success he says,

“…this comes with time and experience, of course.  You don’t get there right away; it takes time to develop that skill set.”

That is why Dr. Chappell believes that the classroom is a great place to start that leadership training in preparation for a career in the business world.  The ability to lead under stress is not only a personal asset but also a critical skill for future business leaders.

He values the opportunity to be a role model for TBC students teaching them what it means to be resilient, adaptable and focused under stress.

The Art of Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is another a critical component of effective leadership and business management. Not confined to problem-solving, conflict resolution can also promote constructive integration of diverse perspectives and opinions.

This is why teaching conflict resolution skills within the business program at TBC is a priority for Dr. Chappell.  He believes that the ability to handle disagreements with respect is a critical component of effective leadership and business management.

“We have to be able to disagree without resorting to violence or other questionable behaviors – that’s how we learn.  That’s how we grow…”

This approach will help students learn to navigate disagreements professionally and ethically, reflecting a Biblical emphasis on peace-making and understanding.

Preparing Students for Real-World Business Challenges

TBC’s business program is designed to offer students a wholistic educational experience.

Dr. Chappell says that students can expect to engage in real-world scenarios that challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills in the areas of ethical business practices, critical thinking, and leadership development. Guided by biblical worldview principles, this program focuses on practical learning through hands-on projects, internships, and collaborations with industry experts.

In addition to preparing them for success in a competitive and dynamic business environment, Dr. Chappell says this is the ideal way to learn how to navigate work environments that may not value a biblical worldview.

“Not everyone is going to go to work for a faith-based organization, so many of our students will enter the secular world.  We want to prepare them for those challenges, to be able to work in those environments, and not just survive, but to thrive.”

How a Biblical Worldview can impact the business world

Dr. Chappell believes that businesses built upon a biblical worldview can contribute positively to communities in many ways.

“I believe that if we are aligned the way we should be, then that worldview will emphasize integrity, compassion, ethical decision making, deciding to do the right thing when no one is looking.  So when we take those practices and integrate them into business, it fosters that culture of honesty, fairness, and respect for everyone.

By prioritizing the principles of servanthood and social responsibility, businesses rooted in Christian worldviews can contribute positively to communities… {in areas such as} inclusivity, sustainability and ethical leadership, and so on.   And this expands into businesses that may not be rooted in a Christian worldview, but that aspire to operate in an ethical realm.  This not only fosters trust and collaboration within organizations, but also influences the economy by creating a more just and compassionate marketplace.”
