What are you doing this Christmas break to re-charge?

So often we think of re-charging as a chance to sleep, sit on the couch, binge-watch shows and movies, take a walk, go to the beach (because in Florida, we go to the beach in December), etc.  And while resting is definitely part of re-charging, there is a real danger in allowing ourselves to simply immerse ourselves in whatever is in front of us without any intentionality.

It is so easy to waste time.  So easy to click the “I’m still watching” button.  So easy to keep scrolling through social media.

By all means, make some time this break to enjoy some of your favorite things.  But don’t forget that you are a spiritual being.  Re-charging your physical body can be accomplished by sitting on the couch.  But what about re-charging spiritually?  That is equally (arguably, more) important, and yet, we tend to ignore it in favor of our Hulu account.

Of course, reading your Bible and prayer are two key elements to re-charging spiritually.  Start there.  If you aren’t doing that, then any other effort to re-charge spiritually will have much more difficulty in achieving its purpose.  This break, make the time to be in fellowship with your creator.  It’s the best thing you can do to re-charge for next semester (or for going back to work).

However, we are beings of the modern age, are we not?  Without trying, we will be bombarded with messages and distractions from other sources throughout the day even when we start off with prayer and reading.  It is a fact of the world we live in.  One simple way you can intentionally re-focus your thoughts on scripture as you go through your day is by listening to podcasts that focus on that subject.

Jeremiah Stanley, Vice President of Student Affairs at TBC, shares several podcasts that he recommends.  “Several years ago, I made a commitment that throughout the week, anytime that I am in my car I do not listen to the radio or music — only podcasts. It is amazing how much time you spend in the car that can be utilized for this activity.”

  • The Bible Project*
  • Help Me Teach the Bible
  • Renewing Your Mind- R.C. Sproul*
  • Truth for Life- Alistair Begg
  • 5 Minutes in Church History*
  • Making Disciples- Robby Gallaty
  • TGC Podcast- The Gospel Coalition*
  • The Word on Life- CJ Hare

*Highly Recommended

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and some are more in-depth than others.  But it is a good place to start if you’re unsure of which podcasts are worth your time.  We hope you will find something that you enjoy and find helpful in helping you to re-charge over the break!
